Three questions you need to ask yourself before attending a personal development seminar

October 29th, 2007 · No Comments

I was chatting with a friend awhile back who said that one of his observations of people who frequently attend personal/professional development seminars is that they are so busy learning how to balance their lives, earn more money and reach their goals that they never actually get out and do it. He had a good point.

I’ve included a list of personal/professional development seminars occurring in November at the bottom of this post. But there are three questions you should ask yourself before signing up for any seminar in order to make it worth your time and money.

Is this really the right course for me? Many seminars I find out about come highly recommended by friends or I read about them on other people’s blogs, and it is easy to get caught up in their excitement. But what is life changing for one person might not be so for another. After reading the description or hearing about the seminar, determine if it addresses areas you are looking to enhance in your life or ideas you’ve been interesting in exploring.

Is it worth the cost? The point here is to be realistic with your time and get the most out of your money. There are many well-known motivational speakers who charge thousands of dollars for multi-day retreats. The cost is worth every penny for some people. That said, these speakers typically have audio tapes and books you can purchase at a much more affordable price. Some speakers even offer a free mini or introductory seminar. I’m always a bit wary when I hear, “You can’t afford not to take this course,” or “It will pay for itself.” Do your research and decide for yourself. If you are looking for some affordable options, The Learning Annex also offers many seminars on specific topics at reasonable prices if you want to explore a new topic.

What do I want to accomplish by attending this seminar? Once you’ve decided on a seminar you’d like to attend, ask yourself what you want to walk away with following the session. It can be as simple as being more motivated at work or meeting new people who share your same interests, or as detailed as having a plan in place to increase your income by 40 percent next year. By asking yourself this question up front, you will get a lot more out of the session.

And once you attend the seminar the single most important thing you can do it take action. Ideas without action are worthless, so decide what actions you will take or ideas you will implement and put a plan in place to make it happen.
