One of the best ways I’ve found to be more productive is to create an efficient and calming workspace. If you find yourself working amid clutter, surrounded by distractions and uncomfortable furniture, you’re probably not going to be as productive as you would like to be.
Although I still need to do this for my office at work, I made it a goal to have my home office set up by the New Year so that I could be more efficient blogging and working on other projects, and I’m happy to say I am writing this blog from my new workspace! Below is my checklist for creating the ideal workspace:
- Good chair that is comfortable and the right height
- Pictures of things that motivate you (maybe with a quote or saying) and make you happy (friends, family, vacations)
- Good filing system that eliminates the piles on your desk and a filing cabinet big enough to hold everything
- Candles or scented sticks to create a calming environment
- Water features are also very calming and block out noise
- Music of your choice
- Good desk lamp because fluorescent lighting in offices can be harsh and too bright
- I don’t have one yet, but many people love cup warmers that keep their mug of tea or coffee warm
- Paint your room in a color that appeals to you and makes you feel at peace. Best to avoid harsh or really bright colors
- A paper shredder safely destroys bills and documents giving you peace of mind from identity theft
- Good desk that is big enough and reflects your style
- Plants keep the air fresh and bring the outside in
The most important thing to remember is that your workspace is a reflection of who you are so take the time to make it a place you will want to spend your time.
